WikiAnesthesia is an open-access online collaboration among anesthesia practitioners from around the world. The WikiAnesthesia mission is to make up-to-date, relevant, and unbiased anesthesia knowledge freely available to anyone with an internet connection.

WikiAnesthesia is:

  • written by anesthesia practitioners, for anesthesia practitioners
  • a continual work in progress; content creation began in 2021 (can we have a stats counter here?)
  • a place for all clinical anesthesia content; focus for initial development is currently on the Surgical Case Reference, a concise but clinically comprehensive guide aimed to help any practitioner prepare for a case with which they are unfamiliar or do not perform regularly
  • a place for discussion and sharing of personal tips and insights
  • a platform for sharing private protocols and guidelines within organizations through Practice Groups

The main focus during initial development is the surgical case reference: a concise but clinically comprehensive guide aimed to help any practitioner prepare for a case with which they are unfamiliar or do not perform regularly. The surgical case references contain the following sections:

  • Preoperative:
    • Descriptions of the patient population undergoing this procedure, common comorbidities, preoperative patient optimization, operating room preparation, and suitable regional/neuraxial techniques
  • Intraoperative:
    • Considerations for induction and maintenance of anesthesia, airway management, monitoring, positioning, and the steps of the surgical procedure of relevance to the anesthesia practitioner
  • Postoperative:
    • Considerations for emergence, disposition, and complications in the immediate postoperative period of relevance to the anesthesia practitioner

Notes

The location of the Notes and Discussion function when viewing articles

Registered users can create their own private notes on any page by clicking My notes within the Page menu. You can use this to make notes on your specific approach to cases, for example.

Any technical info people should know? e.g., backups, space limitation?

Discussion

Registered users are encouraged to discuss articles with the community, click the Discussion button within the Page menu, enter a topic name and begin. The discussion page is visible to non-registered users, and can be used to talk about potential changes to the article, personal tips, and recommendations.

Practice Groups

Practice groups is a feature that allows members of an organization to use the WikiAnesthesia platform to create and curate local anesthesia practices and protocols.
